Disability Mentoring Day Program

October 14, 2010

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is launching a new inititive and website to help people living with disabilities into the job market and especially into emerging green jobs. This is a huge undertaking that we at New Horizons wanted our readers to take advantage of while it’s news worthy.

AAPD’s Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) Program is a national job-shadow and career exploration program designed to link students and jobseekers with disabilities to employers interested in hiring people with disabilities. AAPD coordinates DMD national through a network of more than 350 volunteer DMD Coordinators. DMD Coordinators are responsible for local DMD programs and share information about their programs on

DMD is recognized nationally on the third Wednesday of every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month. AAPD encourages our network of DMD Coordinators to center their local DMD activities around this date; however DMD activities can and do occur around the country on many different dates. Disability Mentoring Day is a large-scale national effort to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring leading to internship and employment opportunities.

Hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the largest national cross-disability membership organization in the United States, DMD connects nearly 20,000 job-seekers with disabilities with thousands of employers in more than 300 locations in every U.S. State and Territory and in more than 24 countries worldwide each year.

Over 2,000 participating public and private employers hosted mentees at their places of employment, with many continuing the mentoring relationships for long-term periods.

National Launch

This year, the 2010 Disability Mentoring Day National Launch will be held in Washington, DC to recognize the many public supporters and national employers who make Disability Mentoring possible across the country each October, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.  On October 20, 2010, AAPD will host a DMD National Kick-Off Breakfast that will feature leaders from the US Department of Labor and the US Social Security Administration speaking about their commitment to hiring people with disabilities in federal jobs.

Green Jobs

AAPD will also be launching our new DMD Green Jobs Initiative, generously supported by the Walmart Foundation and announced by Walmart at the 10th Anniversary DMD National Launch last year.  Following the Kick-Off Breakfast, area college students with disabilities will be paired with leading Administration and public officials for a day of high-level job-shadowing and mentoring opportunities.  More information to come!
